There are a few questions we do get asked about visiting Scotland so we hope to make sure that this blog post can cover some points.
The Grand Lodge of Scotland is a Foreign Grand Lodge; direct communication with their lodges is prohibited until both Grand Lodges verify the lodge's and visitor's regularity.
The most important thing to do is the following;
Get details of the Scottish lodge, including dates and its province.
Contact your provincial/district grand secretary with these details, who will forward them to the UGLE Grand Secretary, who will then contact the Grand Lodge of Scotland’s Grand Secretary. Both will verify the lodge and brother visitor.
After the checks, the Scottish lodge will be contacted, and you will receive an email from your provincial/district grand secretary authorizing your visit.
Scottish lodges are normally allowed to contact you directly regarding payment of the Festive Board after authorization has been completed by both Grand Lodges.
Always remember this has to be done for every visit even repeat visits as circumstances can change.
Additional notes:
Bring your clearance certificates with your grand lodge certificate. If you've resigned from a lodge, obtain a clearance certificate from that lodge as well.
When entering a Scottish lodge, be prepared to prove if requested your status as a freemason with the signs, tokens, and words of the three degrees. Don't be offended if asked; they need to verify your identity on the ground.
If you are a first-time visitor, always bring a good bottle of whiskey/rum for both the outgoing and incoming Right Worshipful Masters. English rum is always a welcome sight in Scottish lodges.
